pop system publicly available for unix?

Is there a POP system publicly available for UNIX (BSD)?  I got the book
_New_Horizons_in_Educational_Computing_ and read the section on POP there
and am interested in playing around with it, but the only mention of a
system that POP runs on was VAX/VMS.
