Ah .... when asking for help, it's always important to mention
hardware platform as well as operating system (and version).

The solaris version of poplog has not been updated for a long time
and I have never been in a position to test that the PC version of
solaris poplog works.
The solaris+pc version is
pcsolaris1552.tar.gz
Available here:
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/poplog/new/pcsolaris1552.tar.gz
dated 30th Aug 1999. I think it was built by someone at Sussex
University. Very few people have ever used solaris poplog on PC
as far as I know.
The file you downloaded:
solaris1553.tar.gz
available here:
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/poplog/new/solaris1553.tar.gz
is for Solaris on SPARC (last updated March 2003). The latest
version of Solaris on which I have been able to test that is
5.9 Generic_118558-11
running on a sparc in our computing centre.

So I have no idea whether either of them will work on Solaris 10. If
you really want to use poplog you'll have the best experience with
it using version 15.6 on some version of linux on a PC, since that
is the only version in which I have been able to install bug-fixes
and updates.
The current installation script may cause problems on some recent
versions of linux, because of reorganisation of the file structure,
but if you report your problem installing it, we should be able to
advise you on how to complete the installation. (On redhat and
fedora systems you may have to disable some security extensions for
poplog to work.)
If you really want to use poplog on solaris on a PC try the
pcsolaris tar file (version 15.52). Untar it and read the
install.txt file.
There is no specific installation script to link it as there is for
linux versions. If sun have been as good at backward compatibiliy on
pc solaris as they have been on sparc solaris the binaries should
just run, though you may have to rebuild saved images.
However, since it was linked on an unknown system at least 7 years
ago it may not work.
The binaries are in the subdirectory $usepop/pop/pop. If the
'basepop11' binary (linked to 'pop11') runs you can try building
everything on top of it. I think the install.txt file explains
what to do.
Are you already familiar with pop11/poplog?
